‘ballroom gothic juntabilly garage band’ …is an apt descripton of this band. For folks who prize unspoiled simplicity in rock and roll -especially rockabilly. Tav Falco’s Panther Burns may be the ultimate: Drenched in echo, Falco goes through a familiar repertoir of Elvis Presley-derived “whooops”, mutters, and coos, while an amateurish backing band (that included Alex Chilton in the early years) grinds away looking like high school rocker’s struggling through their first rehearsal. The deliberately slowed-down tempo and brazen sloppiness invest “Behind the Magnolia Curtain” with an intriguing conceptual purity. The rawness turns prolonged exposure into a painful experience.
The four songs on “Blow Your Top” provide more of the same frayed recklessness. Thanks to cleaner sound and playing that verges on being professional, this set almost has commercial potential.(See “Love Is My Business” for proof.) It’s still a long way from Falco’s sweaty hysteria to the well-oiled of the Stray Cats, though. -from Jon Young in ‘The Trouser Press Guide to New Wave Records’(1983)
